What is Neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback is a treatment system that works directly with the brain. The purpose is to allow the brain to function more efficiently in order to be able to reach a more balanced state. Many of the disorders that are treated with neurofeedback ( ADHD/ADD, Anxiety, Depression, ect..)are a result of the brain being in states of over arousal or under arousal that are causing a neurological imbalance. This imbalance does not allow the individual, in many cases, to be able to control how they respond to various situations emotionally and behaviorally. By “training” the brain to function more efficiently the individual is given more control over their emotional and behavioral responses and therefore, allowing them to have a more appropriate means of dealing with various situations. During neurotherapy the therapist records brain function in the form of electroencephalograph (EEG) activity or regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF). Auditory or visual signals are then fed back to the trainee to inform them of the progress they are making. This is a gradual learning process that applies to any aspect of brain function that we are able to measure. Neurofeedback provides training in self-regulation and self-regulation is a necessary part of good brain function. Self-regulation training allows the system (the central nervous system) to function better.
“Psychotherapy is a tool to enrich the mind, whereas neurotherapy is a tool to enrich the brain.”-Demos
I have spent the last eight years combining the use of neurofeedback with talk, social skills, behavioral, play, and family therapies and have found that a great number of clients have experienced significant progress as a result of combining the two therapies. While combining the two therapies is not always necessary, it has been my clinical experience that for those individuals that are either not responding well to medication or do not wish to take medications to help them achieve their therapeutic goals, neurofeedback has served as an excellent and, in many cases, more permanent solution.

What is a qEEG?
Quantitative EEG (qEEG) or “Brain Map” is a powerful tool for identifying significant excess and/or deficiencies (abnormalities) in an individual’s brain electrical patterns that can be associated with disorders such as ADHD, Autism, Anxiety, Depression, etc. The results of the qEEG are presented in the form of statistics with identified abnormalities in brain activity at 19 locations across the cerebral cortex. 19 sensors are placed on the surface of the head and brain wave activity is recorded over those 19 areas. It is noninvasive and painless. The Brainmap only records the electrical activity of the brain; it does not do anything to the brain.
The Brain Mapping will detect if any area of the brain is malfunctioning or misfiring. The patient’s Brainmap is processed and compared to a “normative database” that was developed through funding from NIH. The normative database we use is FDA approved and is the best in the world. It shows how the patient’s brain should be functioning at that age.
The qEEG is completed at our office in about an hour. The patient wears a cap (non-invasive and pain-free) which has nineteen electrodes that are placed on the patient’s head and the brain wave is recorded through the skull.
